Hand-Drawn Antique-Style Map of the Mainland of Belize
'Mundo Maya' World of the Maya.
Fine art Giclee print from my original hand-drawn map of Belize.
I created Mundo Maya to show the mainland of Belize, the locations of the Maya ruins, and the wildlife found in the rainforest of Central America. It started as a companion map to my Ambergris Caye Chart but soon took off with an energy of its own and gave me an incurable archaeological bug and a deep love of hieroglyphs, petroglyphs, and pictographs.
I wanted to know the meaning of a few glyphs to use as markers for Maya ruins scattered across the country. That quest led me to an archaeologist living and working in Belize. He loaned me reference books, and soon, I was so hooked on studying the artwork and hieroglyphs of the Maya people that I thought I'd never finish the map. At moments, I didn't want to finish it. When I wasn't studying Mayan hieroglyphs, I was sitting in the jungle or at the Belize Zoo, sketching wildlife for the map.
I drew the original on Arches watercolor paper, using an old-fashioned crow quill pen and a well of India ink, and layered the finished drawing with watercolor and colored pencil.
